Malawi President Joyce Banda has appointed Dr. Grant Kabango and Dr. Naomi Ngwira as deputy governors of the Reserve Bank of Malawi.

A press statement signed by Chief Secretary to the Government Bright Msaka says the appointments are with effect from Wednesday.

Kabango is deputy governor responsible for supervision of financial institutions whereas Ngwira is responsible for economic services.

Says the statement: “The appointments cover up the four top most positions with Charles Chuka serving as governor and Mary Nkosi as deputy governor responsible for operations.”

Banda has also appointed health-care activist Dorothy Ngoma as national coordinator of the Safe Motherhood Initiative in the President’s Office.

Ngoma, currently executive director of the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives (NOMN), is a critic of poor conditions health-care workers are subjected to and has advocated for human rights in general.
