Malawi President Joyce Banda has said her government will ensure that four roads which were ignored in the Northern Region are upgraded.

Banda said this when she opened the 25 kilometre Ekwendeni-Ezondweni Road in Mzimba on Sunday.

She said apart from completing phase two and three of the Ekwendeni-Mzimba Road, her government is targeting the Jenda-Rumphi, Rumphi-Chitipa and Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay roads.

Banda said plans for the Jenda-Rumphi road were at an advanced stage and that government has for a start already allocated K500 million (about $1.5 million). She said donors also expressed interest to fund the construction.

The President also said construction of the Mzuzu- Nkhata Bay Road will commence soon as African Development Bank (AfDB) has expressed interest to fund the road.

She said roads are an integral part of economic development.

“In short term, construction of roads boosts people’s income as people get employed.

“I just want to appeal to people living along the road that you should take care of it. Avoid vandalising road signs and other materials because such malpractices cost government a lot of money,” said Banda.
