JB frustrates Gondwe’s presidential ambitions

The New Rainbow Coalition (Narc) President Loveness Gondwe, who competed against former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika and others in the 2009 poll has ruled out herself in the 2014 presidential race, arguing she believes in President Joyce Banda capabilities.

Gondwe is the only female politician who has ever contested on the presidential race in Malawi despite losing in the 2009 elections to Mutharika. She was also the first female to form and lead a political party.

The Narc president said this in an interview yesterday at Mphatso Motel in Mzuzu where the party held a workshop for its members. The workshop centred on campaign strategies and election monitoring to woo masses and ensure free and fair elections.

Gondwe said Banda has proved to be a leader and she (Gondwe) will not bother standing for presidency.

She ruled out frustration from the 2009 race against Mutharika to be a factor for pulling out.

“To be honest, she has tried. The time she was getting into power, we had so many problems talk of fuel shortage, forex shortage, oppression and others but she managed to solve them.

“I don’t need to be jealous because she is a fellow woman. I cannot offer anything better than she has done, so I feel it is waste of time to compete. It is not good to bring each other down when your friends are doing better,” said Gondwe.

However, she said she has not given up on her dream of ruling the country, arguing she is too young to give up and her time will come.

“I have seen that 2014 is not my time. I don’t have to waste time, my money and also cheat people that I will make it in 2014 presidential elections,” said Gondwe.

  2. So rare for politicians to talk like this. Well done Gondwe. I share your thinking, JB has done well though we cant say she has done the best. Realistically people are good at criticizing but I feel there is nobody who could have done better than she has given the circumstances in which she took over government

  3. so you think this is genuine withdraw and you start praising her? how can she stand against JB when she and her husband Yeremiah Chihana are enjoying government money after Yeremiah deceived Malawians with his mare fabrications and cheap political propaganda masterminded by PP and JB in particular that Bingu had 61 billion kwacha. Up to now Yeremiah has not yet produced any tangible evidence to back his stupid claim.
