JB must resign, activists say

Listen to this article

Some activists have called upon President Joyce Banda to resign from her office in respect of Section 80(7)(e) which bars a person from nomination as a President or First Vice-President if he/she holds a public office.

The activists have also called upon Banda’s running mate Sosten Gwengwe to resign as Minister of Trade and Industries.

The activists, Billy Mayaya, Mabvuto Bamusi, Luck Mbewe, Habiba Osman and Phillip Kamangira and Leon Matanda said this at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Tuesday.

But Banda’s presidential adviser on communication and politics Elias Wakuda Kamanga told The Nation in an interview that president Banda cannot resign because Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Maxon Mbendera made it clear that there cannot be a power vacuum.

  1. Why not the suggestion of having an acting president whose mandate would be to ensure that all competing candidates have the same level playing field not one using state resources and food aid for campaign purposes. Otherwise opposition parties have every right to chase this muslim relief organisation which is funding a partisan campaign once the PP is booted out of power.
