Malawi President Joyce Banda has opened a maternity waiting home at Dowa District Hospital worth K19 million (about $50 000).

The facility has been constructed with funding from Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company Limited.

The 36-bed-space facility is under the Presidential Initiative on Maternal Health and Safe Motherhood, which the President is championing.

Speaking during the opening on Tuesday, Banda, said her government is campaigning for safe motherhood since she was also a victim of post-natal complications.

“I made safe motherhood a personal commitment after post-natal complications I suffered from in 1984,” said Banda.

Limbe Leaf managing director Rodney Hagger said the company remains committed to improving the health status of women and children in the country.

“We support projects of this nature, aimed at improving the health status of women and children because we share government’s passion,” said Hagger.

Pharmanova Limited also made a donation of 200 cartons of starter-packs, among others.
