Malawi President Joyce Banda is expected to attend the memorial service of the country’s first president Kamuzu Banda to take place in Kasungu today, his family has confirmed.

Kamuzu’s grand nephew, who is also Minister of Defence Ken Kandodo, said the family wants to remember Kamuzu in a special way since it is now 15 years since he died.

“We are going to remember Kamuzu in a special way this year. We will start with prayers at Kasungu CCAP where President Joyce Banda will be in attendance. We have also invited gospel groups for a show at the community ground,” said Kandodo.

“We are very happy that the President will attend the prayers. We are also hoping that she will also attend the gospel show, which will be graced by groups such as Masintha CCAP, The Great Angels, Kamuzu Barracks and Grace Chinga of Blantyre,” said Kandodo.

He said the family is yet to decide whether to make the gospel show an annual event.

“We will always be coming up with special activities to mark Kamuzu Day because of the foundations he laid for the nation. Kamuzu was a selfless person who wanted the best for his people and we are happy that he was part of our family,” said Kandodo.

Protocol chair of the main organising committee, Katola Phiri, said: “Members of all denominations are welcome to this event. We are expecting all the students from Kamuzu Academy to be in attendance as well as other churches such as Mpeta, Chamwavi, Mtunthama and many more.”
