JB to decide on working with Atupele

Malawi President Joyce Banda has the final decision on the working relationship with her Minister of Economic Planning and Development Atupele Muluzi who was on Tuesday elected UDF national chairperson, effectively becoming presidential candidate in 2014 and her challenger.

People’s Party (PP) secretary general Henry Chibwana, while responding to a question on the possible conflict of interest and ideologies, said PP and the United Democratic Front (UDF) are two different parties with rights and privileges to nominate their own presidential candidates.

“Whether the current arrangement continues is up to the President who is the appointing authority,” he said.

Newly elected UDF secretary general Kandi Padambo said the party needs time to sort out its administrative machinery before commenting on the 2014 elections.

Reacting to his election as UDF secretary general, Padambo said: “I feel very happy and excited, but fully aware of the challenge in front of me.”

Immediate-past secretary general Kennedy Makwangwala accepted his defeat, saying he will serve the party as an ordinary member. Makwangwala served as secretary general for UDF since 2003.
