Malawi President Joyce Banda is attending the memorial of people who died during last July 20’s anti-government demonstrations at Zolozolo Cemetery and Mzuzu Stadium.

Chairperson of the organising committee Moses Mkandawire confirmed Banda’s attendance in an interview on Thursday.

Twenty people died on July 20 2011 during protests against political and economic problems Malawi faced under the late president Bingu wa Mutharika.

The programme shows that there will be prayers led by deputy general secretary of the Livingstonia CCAP Synod the Reverend Maurice Munthali who will lead other members of the clergy from the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, the Muslim Association of Malawi, the Calvary Family Church, Living Waters Church and the Pentecostal Christ Church International.

There will also be laying of wreaths on the graves of those that were buried at Zolozolo Cemetery. Banda and Vice-President Khumbo Kachali will lead the process.

The prayers are scheduled to take place at Mzuzu Stadium.

The theme is: ‘Time for Healing and Reconciliation’.
