Victim of war against corruption: Mphwiyo

President Joyce Banda is yet to provide the Malawi Police Service (MPS) with information on who attempted to assassinate Ministry of Finance budget director Paul Mphwiyo on Friday night in Lilongwe.

Mphwiyo, currently receiving treatment in South Africa after unknown assailants shot at him three times at the gate of his Area 43 residence, is reported to have confided to colleagues at the Ministry of Finance and close friends that he was getting death threats.

The President, speaking on Saturday at a gathering of Muslim women in Lunzu, Blantyre, said she knows who shot Mphwiyo, adding the reasons are that the budget director was about to bust a corruption syndicate.

Banda said Mphwiyo is a victim of her war against corruption, warning whoever stole money meant for purchasing of medicine and construction of school blocks would be brought to book despite the incident.

But as of yesterday, two days after the incident, police said they had not received any information from the State House exposing the culprits.

Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said he was not aware of any information from the President regarding the shooting of Mphwiyo, adding Police were still investigating the matter.

He said no arrests have been made so far.

Presidential press secretary Steven Nhlane said yesterday he was not aware if the President has provided any information to police.

Nhlane said the President might have said what she said because of the nature of the victim’s job, but did not mean she was aware that Mphwiyo was under any threat and needed security.

Mphwiyo, according to sources at Ministry of Finance, might have been targeted in connection with his tough public finance and economic management measures that have closed pilfering loopholes at Capital Hill.

  1. The police should squeeze this stupid president for letting her imortions interfere with what is obviously a very serious police investigation. If she can not provide the police with the names of the people who carried out this evil act she should be arrested full stop. No one in Malawi is above the law, if I had said what she said without providing the police with the names of the assailants I would have been at Maula or Chichiri by now. Does this woman have advisors at all?

  2. This is two three days now but we have not yet heard anything from police if any one is arrested regarding the statement from head of state. This issue is very sensitive in nature why the president always rush to make comments in such matters without clear evidence, remember last time she when armed robery was rampat she said at one of her meetings that she has information that a certain rich man is financing these robers countrywide but up to know no body was arrested connecting that issue. Law experts is not illegal to make such comments publically without backing information?

  3. Quite unfortunate that these incidents are happening in this supposedly God fearing nation.Let us be reminded that there are less than eight months before the country votes in new leadership at all levels of three categories;presidential, parliamentary and ward councellors. These are signs of scramble for leadership. We must exercise tolerance, patience, spirit of understanding and most of all, control of our emotions. Inclination of our emotions should never come into play of our feelings.Caution and restraint should be our pillars of good conduct.Whatever the problem, do not spill blood. We are all going through tough times, remember however, that light awaits us all at the end of the tunnel. Let us maintain peace under whatever circumstances.

You can tell remarks coming from people who are not Malawians or paid up killers who shot the innocent democrat trying to clear the mess at capital hill.
Here is a person whose life is in danger in a hospital in RSA and non Malawian has the brains to call our beloved head of state stupid over the shooting of our fellow citizen?

Nanunso amanuzi, be patriotic, love your country don’t just publish any nonses coming from refugees we are trying to give shelter for Heavens sake.

In other countries such people would have been tracked down and brought to book, kama kwathu kuno, Kaya ndi umbuli or umphawiwu, atola nkhani mumangolemba zilizonse, without sensing whether the words written can build or distroy our nation.

Am not a politician and I don’t disire to become one; but I agree with what one answering to the call ” Hon Ken Msonda” has posted on his Facebook wall; that all peace loving Malawians should join hands to pray for the healing of shot Paul Mphwiyo now receiving treatment in SRA.

That’s being patriotic and having a human heart, si nyansi zanu mwalembazi, take these unMalawian words out.

Kodi a Boma munkati ma refugees onse azipita kwao, zili pati?
Ndi izi ayamba kukutukanilani President wanu, muli duuuuuuu; tsiku linatu azakupherani munthu WA mkulu akanganya amenewa.

Don’t say I did not warn you!

  5. Mayi wawe, sorry, you are the one who is in the wrong, I would not be surprised that you have an orange cake. I agree that it is not good to insult thepresident since she is the head of the state and she deserves our respect. Plain and simple. However, what she did was unpresidential and an obstruction to justice. If she had knowledge of the person who did it, she should just have communicated to the right authorities and not going to the public. Now the public will be waiting to see what happens next. Actually people are wondering why there are no arrests when in fact the president has knowledge of who has done it. Once the president starts getting personally involved in these things it risks everything becoming politicised. Here the police may be on the pressure to arrest anyone so that the president’s utterance on the podium should not be ridiculed.
