If I were

John Kandulu

Chief executive officer (CEO) of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom), I would realise that there is an urgent need to find a solution to the current, periodic power outage that is substantially impacting on households and businesses.

If I were bwana Kandulu, I would realise that Malawians have every reason to be furious and frustrated because they have heard the jazz about low levels of water since time immemorial and even when the rains come, the situation does not improve and Escom changes tune and blames it on the silt which causes damage to power-generating machines.

Oh yes, if only I were the Escom boss, I would further realise that robotic thinking has crept in at Escom where they have all been programmed to respond to the blackouts by connecting it to water levels.

I would further realise that the situation is so pathetic having power all day has become abnormal and in such circumstances, consumers treat this as a fault and report it to the faults department.

If I were Kandulu I would also explain my justification for my continued stay in a position where consumers are not getting what I am supposed to give them—power.

That is if only I were Kandulu, fortunately I am not the CEO of Escom.
