The Isaac ‘Jomo’ Osman-led camp won Big Bullets supporters’ committee elections unopposed at the BAT Ground in Blantyre yesterday after the outgoing committee, led by Godfrey Mbalati, withdrew from the polls.

Osman, whose committee will be in office for three years, is now The People’s Team supporters committee chairperson while Stone Mwamadi is his deputy. Mabvuto Chibambo and Bruce Tambwali are general secretary and treasurer respectively.

Emmanuel Chikoti is vice-general secretary and Dave Matemba is deputy treasurer.

At least 380 Bullets supporters, including former players Rahim Ishmael, Ganizani Malunga and Chisomo Kamlanje, paid K1 000 each at the gates and voted during the peaceful elections, which were conducted and overseen by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and Super League of Malawi (Sulom).

After the elections, Osman, who was also the committee’s chairperson before the outgoing committee took charge few years ago, said they are happy with the win and will immediately start their work “to strengthen the team ahead of the next TNM Super League season”.

“You will see how this team will transform under our command in the supporters committee. We are not here to swindle the team out of cash, but to help it raise enough funds for the welfare of the club in general and the players in particular,” said Osman, adding that they will rope in some of their 15 zonal chairpersons as committee members.

Mwamadi said they will talk more about their plans this weekend when they engage a yet-to-be-identified Super League side in a friendly at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre as part of their welcoming party following their election.

Despite the presence of only one camp at the polls, voting went ahead to make sure some people do not have the legal basis to challenge the outcome of the polls, according to the team’s legal adviser Gaston Mwenelupembe.

The team’s Central and Northern regions fans also conducted their elections on the same day. However, the Southern Region committee acts as the main committee.

The Centre elected Rex Mitochi as chairperson, Ethel Moffat as his deputy and Kennedy Kamanga as general secretary. Abdala Mweneidi is now treasurer whereas Yeremiah Thomson and Luka Chuma are deputy general secretary and deputy treasurer respectively. The committee member positions belong to Selemani Nkhoma, Steve Misauli, Friday Salimu, John Saidi, Dennis Hauya and Jaffali Huson.

Results from Bullets’ Northern Region elections were not ready as we went to press.
