If I were

Joyce Hilda Mtila Banda

President of the Republic of Malawi, I would seriously consider slowing down on external travel which is draining taxpayers’ money.

Yes, ma’am, while some of the trips are necessary in government’s quest to turn the country’s ailing economy around, I would appreciate that some are needless.

How I wish I were JB, because I would realise that it is a mockery to continue outside travels at a time the country is battling a severe economic squeeze and when donors are urging me to consider reducing travelling as a cost-cutting measure.

I would appreciate, if I were my good ‘ole ma’am, that it was wasteful to spend a whopping K308 million on a UN trip even if my government expenditure is better than what the late Bingu wa Mutharika used to spend on similar trips.

If I were the President, I would appreciate that my government cannot afford to be extravagant at this time when there is need to tighten its belt.

As a loving and caring mother and leader, I would seriously consider the need to cut down on excesses. That is, of course, if I were my good ma’am that is Joyce Mtila Banda. Unfortunately, I am not the President of the Republic of Malawi!
