Sikwese: Companies should have clear laws

Sikwese, a former chairperson of the Industrial Relations Court (IRC), gave the advice during a seminar on Fair Labour Practices and Effective Handling of Workers’ in Compensation Case in Lilongwe on Saturday.

She said: “Companies should have clear laws and apply them fairly in times of contract termination with employees if they are to avoid heavy punishments resulting from lawsuits.”

Participants to the seminar included representatives of trade unions, human resources managers, employees and employers. It was organised by Labour Rights Organisation (Laro), which advocates for labour rights.

Laro board member Tiyanjane Butao said they organised the seminar to fill the knowledge gap between employers and employees in terms of labour practices.

Capital Oil Refined Industries human resource manager Robert Mwanja said the training helped him to understand how to deal with workers within their rights.
