Jumbe, who also chairs the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, made the appeal in Salima on Tuesday after his Peacock Seed Manufacturing Company distributed maize seed to 500 farmers and 14 irrigation schemes. The donation is valued at K1.2 million.

He said the treadle pumps would help them become more productive and contribute meaningfully to government’s efforts of ending hunger in the country.

Christina Masoatenganji, agricultural extension development coordinator for Tembwe Extension Planning Area (EPA), observed that Salima has enough water sources for irrigation.

She said the seeds have been distributed to farmers with access to water.

Masoatenganji asked stakeholders to help the farmers to maintain their water channels and provide them with motorised water pumps which require less effort than treadle pumps.
