The country’s Under-18 golfers are scheduled to start competing in the Order of Merit (OM) tournament this Sunday at Blantye Sports Club.
According to Southern Region Junior National Golf Committee chairperson Dingaan Chirwa, the tournaments, that will run up to December this year, have been organised to choose top junior golfers to represent the country at three international tournaments, including the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
“This will be the first time that junior golfers will take part at the Olympics.
“Apart from the Olympics, the OM tournament will also be used to choose golfers to take part in All Africa Games and the World Junior Championship slated for next year,” said Chirwa.
He said the tournaments will be staged in the South and the Centre.
“To that effect, we have started on a small-scale in Blantyre, Limbe and Lilongwe. The committee in Blantyre has been taxed to spread to other golf clubs, but basically the Centre also has a similar committee.
“We are working under the guidance of the Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM),” said Chirwa.
He also said junior golfers who recently graduated to the senior rank will be eligible to participate as the minimum age is Under-18.
