The Malawi Under-20 national netball team yesterday registered their second consecutive win at the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Youth Games in Botswana after thrashing Zambia 56-32.

The victory has put themon the right path to a gold medal hunt in the seven-nation round-robin contestas they now have two wins from three games.

They started the competition on a poor note after losing 38-48 to rivals South Africa in the opener but made a quick recovery with a 60-30 triumph over Lesotho in their second game.

“We had an excellent performance today. We were better than our opponents in all the quarters.

“If we continue like this and win all our remaining games, we might win gold because our only biggest threat are South Africa,” said Junior Queens coach Christina Mkwanda-Nsinji.

After yesterday’s match, Malawi will remain with three games to complete their fixtures; against Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia.

This is the first time in three years that the Under-20 national team has been assembled for an international event.

Malawi has no junior netball league in place and the Junior Queens’ technical panel relied on the recent domestic competitions to select some talented young players.

The most reliable tune-up that the Junior Queens had ahead of their Botswana trip was their international friendly match against Sri Lanka that ended in a 56-56 draw at the College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex in Blantyre in July this year.
