Chiradzulu District Council is set to be transformed following a K133 million ($295 556) grant for construction of a modern office block.

District commissioner (DC) Ali Phiri confirmed in an interview yesterday, saying the project funds were secured from the Local Development Fund (LDF), under the urban window whose projects concentrate on urban centres.

Said Phiri: “Our initial submission was to have a three-story office complex, but the available resources could not allow us so we will have to proceed constructing the single storey.”

Phiri said construction works were scheduled to start in the next two months, after the procurement of a contractor, which is currently underway.

The DC also disclosed that various stakeholders had been meeting to discuss the issue of relocating the district headquarters to a new place, but after several options it was decided that the headquarters must remain where it is.

He said: “The final agreement is that the current place has rich history because this is where, among others, colonialists used to stay so because of that sentimental value, people thought we should not relocate.”

Phiri said construction of the new office block would help ensure that all government offices in the district, which are currently scattered, operate from one roof.

“Due to shortage of space, officers are also scattered but with this new office block we will all be operating under one roof,” explained Phiri.
