K1m at stake for Airtel Rising Star champions

The winner of this year’s Under-17 Airtel Rising Star Tournament stands to cart home K1 million ($2000) prize.

The tournament, scheduled for Agust 15-16 at Luchenza Secondary School in Thyolo, involves boys and girls football teams.

According to Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) vice-chairperson Severia Chalira, 12 teams from across the country will fight for honours.

Chalira told The Nation that the 12 teams are those that emerged champions at education division level.

“We have 12 teams that will compete at the national finals scheduled to take place at Luncheza Secondary School football ground. The teams are those that emerged champions at their respective division. Out of the six divisions, each division will have boys football team and girls football team. We expect fireworks in this year’s tournament,” said Chalira.

She said the runners-up will receive K750 000 while the third placed team will get K500 000.

Apart from team prizes, there will also be individual awards for top goal scorers, player of the tournament and best goalkeeper.
