Weightlifting Association of Malawi (WAM) has announced that the long-awaited Presidential Initiative on Sports tournament will take place on July 27 at the Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC).

WAM president Richard Kuwali has since called on weightlifters to register for the competition.

“Like I said before, the delay was due to lack of equipment. But now the equipment is in and we are ready to host the tournament. We have settled for Lilongwe Golf Club pool side to add colour to the event,” said Kuwali.

The event will comprise 56, 62 and 75 kilogrammes categories and the top-three athletes in all the categories will represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, next year.

Kuwali said it is unfortunate that only few women participate in weightlifting. He, therefore, appealed to women to register for the event as they stand a chance to travel to Scotland for the games.

“The selected athletes will be groomed for not only the Commonwealth Games, but also for the 2016 Olympic Games to be hosted in Brazil. We will give them special training so that by the time we travel to Scotland, [they should be ready for the big stage]. I am appealing to athletes to give their best so as to be eligible for selection,” he said.

Kuwali also announced that Mr. Malawi tournament will be staged on August 26 in Lilongwe.

He said unlike the PIS tourney which targets weightlifters only, Mr. Malawi will include bodybuilders.
