Minister Transport and Public Infrastructure Sidik Mia has said government has set aside K450 million (about $1.5 million) to upgrade roads in rural areas across Malawi.

The minister said this when he presided over the launch of road grading works in Traditional Authority Kuntaja in Chileka, Blantyre, on Friday.

“We want to ensure that all roads are passable so that people can do their business. The project had stalled in the previous years and we are revamping it for easy movement of people [and goods] from one point to the other,” said Mia.

He said the road grading will be done by PVHO in line with its role.

“The project would continue in the coming years to keep such roads in good shape,” he said.

Mia said the upgrading would end by January next year.
