The K72million Enukweni Modern Market in Mzimba is abandoned with no human activity, resulting in tall grass overgrowing the locked premises.

Mbelwa District Council director of planning and development Tamanya Harawa said the market will be opened when 40 people surrounding the facility receive their compensation worth K70 million.

Business_in_the_marketHe said the council completed the compensation evaluation exercise and submitted the report to Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development last month for action.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Muhlabase Mughogho, said the evaluation report will be submitted to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) soon.

However, Senior Chief Mtwalo has described as counterproductive the delay to open the market.

He said the market has no access road, which will negatively affect business, a claim Harawa said will be sorted out once the people are compensated.

Mtwalo said he has been following up with government on the matter as the market is vital for development in his area.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Mzimba North Agnes Nyalonje said with the market, women who currently sell their merchandise along the M1 Road, will have outlets for their farm produce.

“I also believe that road traffic accidents will reduce once the market becomes operational as people will move away from M1 Road,” she said.
