Kabaza operator murdered in NU

 

A 40-year-old bicycle taxi operator who was plying his trade at Kankawo Trading Centre in Balaka was found murdered at Katonda Village in Ntcheu on Monday.

According to Ntcheu Police Station spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the victim, Labani Afiki, was last seen in the company of an unknown person who hired his bicycle taxi, commonly known as kabaza, to take him to Mtonda Trading Centre in Ntcheu. He was never seen again, a thing that prompted his brother to report the matter to police, according to Chigalu.

“His body was found in a garden 50 metres away from Ndenga Road with his bicycle beside him. But he was stripped off his trouser and two big stones were also found near his body which are believed to have been used for murdering him,” he said.

According to Chigalu, postmortem revealed that Afiki’s death was due to severe bleeding and head injuries.

“The motive behind this murder is not yet known, but police officers are on the ground to establish the truth behind his murder,” said Chigalu.

Meanwhile, police have advised bicycle taxi operators to be cautious when conducting their business and have a proper communication system to alert each other on their where abouts. Afiki came from Lupanga Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Msamala’s area in Balaka District. n
