Kabwila challenges MCP

Suspended Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila has challenged the party to attend to her concerns first or else it should forget about her appearing before a disciplinary hearing.

Kabwila was summoned for a disciplinary hearing following her suspension from the party on August 31 2016 but she failed to appear before it as she was outside the country on a parliamentary mission.

But speaking in an interview yesterday, Kabwila said she was ready to face the disciplinary committee anytime she is invited but on condition that all the concerns she raised are resolved.

“I want to clearly know what charges I am facing, who am I appearing before and where will this hearing be held because the MCP headquarters is not a safe place for me.

“Again I would also like to know whose mandate are they acting [on] because NEC only empowered the disciplinary committee to act for 30 days and those days lapsed. I don’t want to appear before a grouping that has no mandate of NEC, I want this to be done fairly by following rules of natural justice,” declared Kabwila.

But MCP deputy secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka said in as far as he was concerned, all the letters that have been sent to Kabwila clearly stipulate the reasons why she is being summoned for a hearing.

“Talking about the neutrality of the venue, I don’t understand why she is putting these demands because senior party members including Honourable Joseph Njobvuyalema have appeared before the same disciplinary committee at the same venue,” said Mkaka.

The deputy secretary general also wondered why the suspended party spokesperson was making a fuss about the mandate of the disciplinary committee.

He said the party was waiting for Kabwila’s return from abroad to reschedule the meeting of the hearing as per her request.

Kabwila alongside fellow legislator- Joseph Njobvuyalema- were suspended during the party’s national executive committee for reportedly causing disputes in the party.

During the meeting, the embattled party also resolved to expel its Salima Central parliamentarian and second deputy director for strategic planning Felix Jumbe.

All the three shunned the NEC meeting despite being invited, citing security concerns.

MCP president Lazarus Chakwera has said the removal of some members is a way of creating room for rebuilding as the party has conclusive information that they were the source of confusion within its ranks.

Kabwila has repeatedly said despite what she is going through, she will not be silenced from criticising poor governance in her party as well as in the country. n
