The Central Region Chess League (CRCL) on Saturday elected Stanley Kafere unopposed as its new leader during regional elections held on Saturday.

This followed outgoing chairperson Ulemu Chiluzi’s decision not to seek re-election whereas another contender Yohane Misomali did not officially present his application to Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam). The polls took place at Lilongwe Technical College.

Chessam general secretary Leonard Sharra was elected CRCL vice-chaiperson. Petros Mfune and Alfred Chimthere successfully swapped their general secretary and publicist positions whereas as Fiskani Mwagomba took over the post of treasurer. Chuma Mwale, Aaron Phiri, Davie Mawango and Joe Mbang’ombe were elected committee members.

“The elections were free and fair. We thank the contestants for maintaining discipline during the polls. However, we urge the elected individuals to work hand-in-hand with Chessam to take the sport to greater heights,” said Chessam publicist Gilton Mkumbwa.

According to Mkumbwa, the South will be the last to hold the regional elections this Sunday at the College of Medicine in Blantyre where the incumbent chairperson Susan Namangale will battle it out against interim general secretary Stanley Mpinganjira.

Meanwhile, the Northern Region Chess League on Saturday elected Isaac Mumba as its new chairperson after defeating Kondwani Nyirenda by 14-12 votes.
