Minister of Civic Education, Culture and Community Development Patricia Kaliati has urged Malawians to be creative and think outside the box by acquiring more informal skills.

She made the remarks on Friday in Blantyre when she presided over a graduation ceremony at Taris Designing and Tailoring School where 15 people received certificates in tailoring and designing.

Kaliati said most people look forward to being employed instead of being their own employers and employers of others.

Kaliati: Be creative

She said: “It is high time Malawians learnt that being employed is not always the solution. People need to build on the programmes and trainings which they already did. For those people that were trained as teachers but are failing to secure jobs, we are saying, why not start a small school or indeed provide part-time lessons to students in their communities and generate income from there?”

Taris Designing and Tailoring School managing director Susan Chatha said the 15 graduates underwent a year-long training in various tailoring aspects and the school’s management is satisfied with skills they attained.

Taris Designing and Tailoring School was established in April last year and it started with only one student.

By the end of last year, the school had enrolled three students. n
