Kalibu missionaries, teachers plant trees in Chileka

Kalibu Academy missionaries from Finland, in collaboration with teachers at Kalibu Academy in Chileka, Blantyre and surrounding communities, on Tuesday planted trees at Ntenjera in the area.

The tree-planting exercise is part of the institution’s ongoing initiative in its efforts to curb deforestation.

The school’s deputy head teacher Norma Konono underscored the need for collective efforts in tree-planting as it is one way of averting the impact of wanton cutting down of trees.

She said: “We have seen that in Malawi, there are basically no trees and we thought it was proper for us as an institution to initiate this project so that others may follow suit,” he said.

In a separate interview, one of the Kalibu Academy missionaries, Laura Niemi, said tree-planting is an investment that goes a long way.

“God has given us this task to take care of nature and we know that if we do not do that we also reap the consequences of having no trees.

“When you plant trees you are not doing it for yourself, but for the future generations, so it is important that people invest in such initiatives,” she said.

In her remarks, the school’s head of agriculture department, Kupatsa Mtambalika, said they are committed to mitigating effects of climate change through tree-planting. n
