Kalindo pleads not guilty, granted court bail

The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday granted court bail to politician-cum-comedian Bon Kalindo who pleaded not guilty to the charge of publishing false news likely to cause alarm.

The State charged Kalindo with publication of false news likely to cause fear and alarm to the public, contrary to Section 60 (1) of the Penal code.

In her submission before the court, State prosecutor Cecilia Zangazanga, narrated that on November 1 2021, during a programme on a local television station, Kalindo alleged he knew who is behind the killing of persons with albinism in the country.

Before adjourning the case to February 1 2022 for commencement of full trial, senior resident magistrate Wanangwa Nyirenda revoked the police bail which Kalindo was granted on December 13 in Lilongwe and replaced it with the court bail.

Setting bail conditions, the magistrate ordered Kalindo to produce cash bail bond amounting to K50 000, to surrender his travel documents to police, to report to Area 30 Police Station fortnightly, to present two sureties with non-cash bail bond of K500 000 and not to interfere with State witnesses and evidence.

Lawyer representing Kalindo, Issa Hassan, said he was satisfied with the outcome of the hearing.

The lawyer said his client was given a court bail which has replaced a police bail with a justification that it is just a court procedure to ensure that bail conditions must be added.

Kalindo was last week re-arrested minutes after he was granted bail by the Zomba Resident Magistrate’s Court, on allegations that he committed other offences during the recent Lilongwe demonstrations.

He was earlier arrested on allegations that he told protesters in Mangochi that former second deputy Speaker of Parliament Clement Chiwaya did not shoot himself, but was murdered at Parliament Building in Lilongwe.
