Gabriel Kambale turned on a creative display to win the Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) Closed Championship on Sunday.

The three-day tournament teed off on Friday and attracted a field of 63.

Kambale: It feels good to win

Playing off handicap (h/c) five, Kambale registered 146 gross.  Chimwemwe Chimwaza was the runner-up with a gross of 163 while Gift Chidya Gondwe (h/c9) grossed 167 to finish third.

In his victory speech, Kambale said it was not easy as Chimwaza, who was his closest contender, gave him a good run.

“It feels good to win. Of course, Chimwemwe [Chimwaza] was outstanding, but he needs to master how to complete his game after a good start. My playing partners were equally fantastic,” he said.

Initially, professional golfer and coach Dingaan Chirwa finished third, but he had to forfeit the position as professional golfers are not supposed to accept prizes from amateur competitions.

In A Division, David Nyirenda (h/c11) emerged champion after grossing 163 followed by John-Gift Mwakhwawa and Edward Kauka, respectively.

Mwakhwawa (h/c12) had 167 gross whereas Kauka (h/c14) grossed 168.

BSC golf captain Keta Mulwafu said the event marked the start of the 2019 golf season.

“We thank Blantyre Sports Club management and directors for sponsoring this tournament. They do it to appreciate the club’s membership,” he said.
