Kambewa, Kayira cycle for safe water

Cyclists Stewart Kambewa and Kwame Kayira  on Saturday started cycling from Marka Border in Nsanje to Chitipa Border to raise funds for the drilling of 9 boreholes in 9 villages in 9 districts.

The Clean Water Cycle Malawi 999 will cover a distance of more than 1 800 kilometres.

Kambewa, who is the team leader, said  in an interview at Kameza Round-about in Blantyre that they decided to cycle for the cause of women and children who are facing challenges to access clean and safe water in villages.

“Currently, we have already started with one borehole which we handed over on September 17 at Mmehera Village, in Traditional Authority [T/A] Nkanda’s area in Mulanje with a total cost of K1.5 million on self-sponsored initiative.

“Our intention is to finish the cycle by October 10, but the whole project of drilling all the nine boreholes is scheduled to finish in April 2017. We have targeted Mulanje, Balaka, Dedza, Dowa, Salima, Nkhata Bay, Mzimba and Karonga,” said Kambewa.

The team also has John Moyenda as road manager,   and treasurer Arthur Madzedze.

Kambewa said they left Marka in Nsanje on Saturday and slept at Dyeratu in Chikwawa. On Sunday they spent a night in Balaka before leaving for Lilongwe yesterday.
