Kamuzu Acadamy Alumni gives Immigration PPE

Kamuzu Academy Alumni Association (KA3) on Wednesday donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services (Dics)to help in the fight against Covid-19.

The K5 million donation included face masks, face shields and sanitisers.

Speaking during the presentation of the donation in Blantyre, KA3 member Masautso Malaicha said they recognise that immigration officers represent another significant frontline role in dealing with migrants.

He said: “Immigration officers are facing heightened risk of infections by virtue of constant dealing with people who may be infected while also not wearing requisite PPE.

“In consideration of their plight, we came together to raise funds amounting to over K5m, which has been used to procure a range of Covid-protective items that will be will be delivered directly to our five border posts Songwe, Mchinji, Dedza, Mwanza and Muloza.”

Malaicha also said the group last made similar donation to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Kamuzu Central Hospital and Mzuzu Central Hospital.

In her remarks, Dics commissioner responsible for administration Pudensiana Makalamba said the donation will help in the fight against the pandemic.

She said: “Our officers deal with people every day and for them to work efficiently, they are supposed to put on PPE to protect themselves and their families.

“Most of our officers have been hit greatly by this pandemic and every time we conduct the Covid-19 test, we find some officers results come out positive.
