Kamuzu Academy Orchestra will on December 1 face Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Brass Band in a fundraising concert scheduled for Sunbird Capital Hotel.

Kamuzu Academy director of music Donald Kaluwile said funds realised from the concert will be directed towards procurement of medical equipment at Mtunthama Health Centre in Kasungu.

He said: “The proceeds at this concert will benefit Mtunthama Health Centre for the acquisition of critical surgical equipment, especially for their maternity wing, and for the rehabilitation of their Tuberculosis examination room which is in a terrible state.

“We believe this is a noble gesture that will make a difference to our community in saving lives of patients.”

Kaluwile said it is high time people in the country started appreciating classical music and the show will give an opportunity for people to sample one such.

He said: “Our goal is to promote appreciation of classical music in Malawi following the Leipzig and the Viennese Old School of Music, including pieces from Handel’s Messiah and the Water Music.

“Such orchestral music is missing in Malawi as most people are only exposed to urban dance music played by local and international bands and artists.”

MDF Brass Band’s Captain Levison Chisambi concurred with Kaluwile, promising the show will be of international standards and will give patrons an alternative to music entertainment.

Kaluwile earlier said the two music departments have been interacting for some time in their music exchange programmes regarding the Associated Board of the Royal College of Music grade examinations and the Cambridge IGCSE and A-level examinations.

“According to research by the Chancellor College Music Department, students who read and write music have a high level of discipline and perform better in other subjects such as Mathematics and sciences.

“This is because classical music comprises very complex elements such as pitch, harmony, syncopation and dynamics that help to exercise their concentration level. Hence, they find the other subjects easier.”n
