Kamwendo’s Liga Maculmana makes history

Joseph Kamwendo was part of Liga Maculmana’s success story on Sunday when they became the first Mozambican club to secure a CAF Confederations Cup group-stage berth.

Maculmana, who beat Wyda Casablanca 2-0 a fortnight ago in Maputo, qualified on an away goal rule after losing 3-1 in the return fixture in Morocco on Sunday.

Maculmana’s other Malawian player Zicco Mkanda confirmed yesterday that no other Mozambican side has advanced in any CAF continental competition.

“We earned the group stage slot following the away goal our defender Zinedine Junior scored from a direct free kick in Morocco. It is a first in Mozambican club football history. We now await losing teams that will join us from the Champions League,” Mkanda said in a telephone interview.

Maculmana went this far after easing past Gaborone United (Botswana) and Nigeria’s Lobi Stars. So far, Mkanda and Kamwendo have a goal each in the tournament.

In the same contest, Atusaye Nyondo played a full game, but his Supersport United lost 3-1 to ENPPI of Egypt on Saturday to crash out of the competition. Supersport and ENPPI drew 0-0 in Egypt a fortnight ago.
