Mighty Wanderers midfielder Joseph ‘Shakira’ Kamwendo has hailed his goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa saying his sterling performance earned the Nomads the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy ultimate K7 million prize.

Nomads beat Silver Strikers 2-0 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday. They scored through Victor Mpinganjira and substitute Moses ‘Luba’ Chavula in each half. Chavula was playing his first game for the Nomads after ending his romance with a South African club.

Chipuwa saved Silver’s Mustafa Salimu penalty in the 36th minute. Silver were awarded the penalty after defender Francis Mulimbika handled the ball in the box.

“After conceding that penalty, we all put our belief in Chipuwa. We knew he was going to save that penalty. And after that incredible save, we were instilled with a new sense of self-belief and confidence. That is why we fought hard and eventually won the game,” Kamwendo told Sunday’s MBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show Sports programme.

In the semi-finals against Big Bullets at the same venue last week, Chipuwa also stopped two penalties to help Wanderers beat Bullets 4-3 in post-match penalties.

“He is just brilliant in goals. He is becoming better by each game. I am really impressed with his outstanding performance so far. He is the pillar of the team,” said Kamwendo.
