Member of Parliament for Kasungu Central Ken Kandodo has promised to hike sponsorship for the Ken Kandodo Trophy from K3 million (about $7 500) to K4 million (about $10 000).

Speaking during prize presentation at Kasungu Community Centre ground last Saturday, Kandodo, who is also Minister of Defence, said sports is vital in the development of any country.

“When I decided to set aside some money for teams to compete for, I never thought that many players will be picked to play in Super League. But today more than 10 players from this area are now playing for top Super League teams,” said Kandodo.

He said it was for this reason that he has decided to increase the stakes to attract more teams to participate in the competition.

Vice-chairperson for of Central Region Football League (CRFL), Daniel Mphepo, confirmed that 10 players from Kasungu Police, Central East Education Division (Ceed) and Madzi have been picked to play for Super League teams.

During the football finals on Saturday, Madzi, who are sponsored by the Central Region Water Board, beat Division 5-4.

In netball, Division beat Ceed 21-10.
