Kanjedza Islamic Sisters recently celebrated 26 years of existence.

Our reporter JAMES CHIMPWEYA talks to secretary of the organisation Jamira Lire on the issue.

What is the background to the organisation? This organisation was established on January 11 1987 as a platform for women’s ministry (dawah). We established this organisation after realising that former president Dr Kamuzu Banda did not give us the freedom of worship we deserved.

You may recall that we were facing challenges to use the hijab and MBC was allocating us five minutes to cover our prayers. We summoned the courage to book an appointment with him and he granted us. Our intention was to ask for more time for Islamic prayers on MBC and we are happy that he granted us our plea.

What do you consider as your achievements during the 26 years you have been in existence?

Our main achievements can be seen through the prayer groups we have established over the years. We have established 22 prayer groups, which is no mean achievement.

Apart from that, we have made 1 633 local trips and one pilgrimage to Mozambique and Zambia.

We have also been involved in charity through which we support 60 needy students. Recently, we held a big walk through which we raised K250 000. We used the money to buy relief items which we donated to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).

The group has also helped us learn to help one another.

What challenges have you encountered?

Lack of resources is the major challenge. The problem has held us back from reaching out to many underprivileged students.
