Nation Publications Limited (NPL) sports news analyst Peter Kanjere on Friday put Malawi and NPL on the world map in writing after winning the 2013 Cosafa Cup Print Media Award.

The announcement was made in Ndola on the eve of the finals of this year’s Council for Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Senior Challenge Cup which was taking place in Zambia.

In the finals, the hosts beat Zimbabwe’s Warriors 2-0.

According to a press statement posted on www.cosafa.com, Kanjere is the only winner in the category which attracted many entries from the region.

Kanjere, who has won several awards locally, including the current Namisa Sports Journalist of the Year, won the R10 000 (K340 000) Cosafa award with a preview of the tournament titled ‘Friends turn foes’, subheadlined: ‘Saintfiet’s Flames face Zimbabwe’ published in Weekend Nation of July 13 2013.

Zimbabwe and Malawi, but with a twist. A strong introduction draws immediate interest from the reader and takes the angle of the coach looking to make up for the disappointment of not being able to fulfil a past post and is now plotting his revenge.

“The winning article was well-researched with quotes that add value to the story. It is also written in an easy-readable, conversational style,” reads in part the Cosafa press statement.

Kanjere said he is happy and humbled by the recognition while NPL sports editor Michael Mmeya said his news analyst deserved to win because, as usual, he tirelessly worked to get everything into the winning article.

“I am humbled. To be honest, I did not expect to win. I was not in Zambia and I just sent my entry to try my luck,” said Kanjere who revealed that it was not his first time to send an entry to the competition.

Zambia’s Jean Ndayisenga won the same amount in photography.
