Veteran striker Esau Kanyenda has cast doubt on his 2015 Cosafa Cup availability, citing a hectic season in South Africa where he plays for Polokwane City.

“I do not know if I will be available as I need to rest. It has been a long season,” he said, adding that if he makes it then it is for the sole reason of keeping in shape.

The cup is scheduled for May 17 to 30 2015 in South Africa. Malawi’s opening game is against the Mambas of Mozambique on May 24.

However, the start of the regional competition will coincide with the end of the South Africa football season, hence, Kanyenda’s doubts.

Kanyenda has scored two goals in the last three games of the Flames since coach Young Chimodzi recalled him.

“Since coming back, he has made a big impact. Every team needs a leader, especially when the game is hot and that is what he brings,” Chimodzi explained yesterday.

“However, we have not decided whether to have most South Africa-based players in the squad, so, I cannot say much on Kanyenda.”

The Flames go straight into the last eight after being seeded alongside guest participants Ghana, Botswana, holders Zambia and Botswana and Mozambique.
