Kapito arrested

Police in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe on Saturday arrested a fierce critic of President Bingu wa Mutharika, human rights activist John Kapito, hours before he was to fly out to Geneva, Switzerland for a United Nations (UN) meeting.

National police spokesperson Davie Chingwalu disclosed in an interview that Kapito was arrested in connection with illegal possession of foreign currency and was detained at Lilongwe Police Station for interrogation.

Chingwalu said he had not yet established the amount.
