Karonga District Council says it is overwhelmed with the progress and sense of ownership for projects under Community Managed Socio-Economic Projects (Cmsep) which are said to be well coordinated compared to others.

The council, under Cmsep, received K98 million to facilitate implementation of various development activities managed at community level in which the community chose to repair Kaporo Rural Hospital in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kilupula, a market shelter at Ngala in T/A Mwilang’ombe and Lupembe Waiting Home in Traditional Authority Kyungu’s area.

During a media tour to some of the projects on Monday, acting director of public works Robert Phiri said community managed projects have proven to be efficient because there is total support and coordination from the local people.

“We are impressed with the community managed projects. We have actually seen that community managed projects are better than Constituency Development Fund and Local Development Fund in terms of the ownership,” he said.

Kilupula Area Development Committee chairperson Nelson Mwakisulu hailed the introduction of community managed socio-economic projects, saying they have the potential to transform the communities because of the total empowerment component and participation of the local citizenry.

“We feel this is the way to go, community managed projects are better because they are chosen and implemented by the community themselves,” he said.
