Consistent performances by colonel Rex Kathewera (retired) and Shira Golowa inspired them to emerge champions of this year’s TNM golf tournament at Gymkhana Golf Club in Zomba on a scorching Sunday.

It was a tight-throat affair in the men’s category in which Kathewera counted out his runner-up Nick Makawa while Furkan Karim was third on 39 points.

In the women’s category, Golowa stood head and shoulders above the rest on 35 points to pip Beatrice Mangwana who finished second on 33 points. The champions got a trophy and S5 Samsung each while the runners-up got Samsung Note each.

“I am overjoyed to retain the championship having won it again last year. Thanks to TNM because we rarely have such big tournaments here in Zomba,” said Golowa.

In subsidiary prizes, nearest to the pin in women’s category was Lucy Ganiza while Sope Kayira achieved the feat in the men’s section. Teri Amaro had the longest drive in the women’s category whereas Christopher Bulawayo did it in the men’s section.

TNM’s head for Zomba region Francis Mwamadi hailed the golfers for taking part in the tournament, saying the turnout was overwhelming.

The company’s chief commercial officer, Dan Makata, said they organise the tournament on annual basis in the old capital city as a token of appreciation for the support they get from their Zomba customers.

“It also provides us an opportunity to interact with existing and potential customers,” he said.

TNM donated a K200 000 cheque for the maintenance of the greens.
