G and G Boxing Promotions has organised a boxing tournament that will see welterweight champion Malani Kayuni from Blantyre and Mzuzu-based Laston Kayira fight at Obrigado Leisure Park on September 28 in Mzuzu.

Kayira opted for a rematch bout, meaning that he has not accepted his first defeat to Kayira.

“Kayira has been requesting us to organise a rematch bout against Kayuni. As promoters, we thought it wise to do so. We want to give Kayira a chance to prove his worthiness,” said G and G Boxing Promotions director Pacharo Makumi Gondwe on Thursday.

According to Gondwe, the bout will also incorporate other supporting fights involving Mwayi Kamanga, Amos Kayira, Patrick Kayira and Secret Chirwa.

“We cannot have only one bout. We will incorporate other supporting bouts,” said Gondwe.

Former Northern Region Boxing Committee chairperson Stewart Moyo said the bout has come at the right time when people were asking the committee for the bouts.

“We have stayed for long without having bouts in Mzuzu. I received a lot of complaints from people who love boxing. Of course, It will also be good to give Kayira chance to take on Kayuni. It is my hope that more people will come to witness the bout,” said Moyo.

Kayira, 20, is currently being trained by up-and-coming boxing coach Rasco Simwaza.

“I am happy that sponsors have finally come in to support the rematch. Currently, I am training with Simwaza so that I silence Kayuni this time. I want people to know that Kayuni did not defeat me, but judges poorly graded me,” said Kayira at his training base, Moyale Barracks.

But Kayuni belittled Kayira’s statement, saying he is a young boxer who has nothing to show.
