Rivalry in military football teams comes face-to-face this Friday as Kamuzu Barracks host an all-Army bonanza organised by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF).

Mafco, Red Lions, Moyale, Airborne Rangers, Cobbe Barracks and hosts Kamuzu Barracks will take part in the bonanza where Army Commander General Henry Odillo will be the guest of honour.

Every year, MDF hosts inter-unit sports festival, which includes all kinds of sports disciplines, but this week’s event is an isolated one.

According to the Office of the Directorate of Training (DoT), the bonanza has been organised for General Odillo and senior Army officers to appraise the performance of the military teams and motivate them.

Mafco coach Stereo Gondwe said he will use the event to select players for next season.

“This will afford us a great opportunity to form a team that will represent Mafco next season. Most of the teams we are facing have improved a lot and this offers us the best test of our capabilities,” Gondwe said in a telephone interview.

Some of the players trying their luck with Mafco are former Civo players Martin Masoatheka and Gasha Mphizi as well as former Big Bullets player Welani Nyirenda.

“It is not automatic that they have a place in the team. They must convince us through this bonanza. We have more players who are trying their worthy here,” warned Gondwe.

The bonanza will coincide with an all civilian charity football involving Big Bullets, Mighty Wanderers, Epac FC and Silver Strikers scheduled for Civo Stadium.
