Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) will now start offering advanced surgeries to patients with abdominal complications using a laparoscope donated by the University of North Carolina (UNC).

A laparoscope is equipment used by surgeons to do abdominal operation with small incisions with the aid of a camera. It is called key hole surgery in medical terms.

Deputy hospital director Mabel Chinkhata said it is the first time the hospital has this kind of machine, which she said is a step up in the history of surgeries at KCH.

She said with this kind of machine, the hospital will be performing high-tech surgeries and will increase the number of patients assisted.

“All along, we have been performing general surgeries, which are manual and require a lot of time. But this equipment can perform faster and better, so our services will improve a lot,” said Chinkhata.

Apart from the laparoscope, UNC Project has also donated a colposcope and a leep machine used for gynaecological examination procedures, which involve diagnosis and treatment of abnormal or cancerous conditions in women.

UNC Project country director Francis Martinson said the donation is worth K40 million and came from UNC Department of surgery by Karl Stors, a surgical equipment company.

Martinson said UNC Project partnered with KCH and Ministry of Health to ensure quality health service delivery to people.

“This donation marks yet another milestone in our service unto humankind and our collaboration with KCH and Ministry of Health. We will continue to strive to support services to our hospitals,” said Martinson.

He said UNC Project has also donated to KCH a Burn Unit with theatre equipment and established pathology laboratory services, which are vital in cancer management.
