Keep broken bottles away from angry prostitutes

A broken glass bottle in the hands of an angry sex worker can be a deadly weapon, fun seekers who were enjoying a night out in some bar at Malomo Trading Centre in Ntchisi on May 2 this year can testify.
The night was blissful until one sex worker, Mercy Zinyati, sensed competition from a colleague, who, she claims, wanted to snatch her client.
According to police prosecutor sergeant Austin Daudi, Zinyati’s patience was tested when her client sat too close to the colleague, Wezzie Banda.

“She broke a bottle and stabbed Banda on the abdomen and left arm. Banda was quickly rushed to Malomo Health Centre where she was treated,” said Daudi.
He further told the court how Zinyati’s second victim, Shafina Amazi, returned from buying a cigarette for one of her clients only to find him exchanging blows with the convict.
In an attempt to rescue her client, Amazi quickly tasted Zinyati’s wrath.
“Zinyati threw a broken glass bottle in Amazi’s direction; it landed on her back,” he said.
Zinyati’s explanation that she injured the two as she defended her ‘businesses’ did not convince second magistrate Young Ng’oma, who fined her K50 000 (US$111) or in default serve a five months jail term
She failed to pay the fine and has since been committed to Maula Prison.
