The relationship between local R ‘n’ B musician Kell Kay and Standard Bank plc took another exciting turn on Monday when the artist unveiled a theme song for the bank.

The song, titled It Can Be, is in line with Standard Bank plc’s newly adopted slogan It Can Be.

Kell Kay first dropped a hint at releasing a thank you song for Standard Bank plc when he, with the help of the bank, held an online live performance at the bank’s Capital City banking hall last weekend. The performance was aired live on Mikozi Network.

The song, produced by M Steaks, was released alongside its video and basically talks about the possibilities being brought about by the services that Standard Bank plc offers clients on its different platforms. The R‘n’B star got vocal support from Patience Chaponda in the song.

“Bizinesi nyatwa, moyo wa nyatwa, ukwati wa nyatwa, zonse za nyatwa, akutero, akutelo, ku Standard Bank. Tsogolo lanu ndi lotheka. Zinthu zimafika, Africa zabhoo, Malawi zabhoo, We can be…” goes part of the song.

The music video was produced by videographer Peter Mazunda.

Some of the scenes in the video were captures in the bank’s offices, some along the newly constructed Parliament Roundabout Bingu National Stadium dual carriage highway and Blantyre’s popular eatery, Pamudzi.

In an interview, Kell Kay said the opportunity that the bank has given him to produce their theme song represents a shift on how corporate organisations are now looking at the local creative sector and the opportunities they can tap from the industry.

“It is an amazing feeling. It feels great to be selected as a local artist to do a theme song for the bank. It is a special honour and I am so grateful to the bank for the privilege. A few years ago this could not have been possible,” he said.

Last week Standard Bank plc head of marketing Thoko Unyolo said the bank believes in creating endless opportunities for people to achieve their dreams. The bank took care of the costs of Kell Kay’s 30-minute online show which recorded 25 000 online views in less than 24 hours.
