Khonje cherishes Dubai Expo experience

Model-cum-fashion designer Mabel Khonje has lauded her first exhibition at the ongoing Dubai Expo in the United Arab Emirates as a good learning experience.

The designer, who trades under Boudoir By Doll Mabel, was among Malawian businesses selected to participate at the Dubai Expo 2021.

Speaking in an interview from Dubai, she said the exhibition has accorded her enterprise networking and exposure.

Khonje said: “It’s an honour and privilege to be here and to be able to share my designs and Malawi with the world through this Expo. The platform has every ingredient needed for any business venture.”

Apart from her exhibition, Khonje said she was privileged to attend a workshop which addressed the theme of gender disparities in access to education.

The designer said she is convinced that through her exhibition she has given a good account of the potential of Malawi in as far as fashion and designing is concerned.

“I wish if more Malawian businesses came for this showcase. All the other participants are very friendly and accommodating to everyone,” she said.

The designer stole the limelight last year when she launched her international lingerie designer wear.

Khonje’s participation at the Dubai Expo was under the facilitation of the Malawi Investment Trade Centre (Mitc) under the Ministry of Trade.

In a separate interview, Mitc public relations manager Deliby Chimbalu said they are continuously mobilising private sector companies to attend the event because they believe it is a good platform for forging business relationships and also a learning the latest innovations used in different industries.

She said: “We are also taking advantage of this platform to promote Malawi as a brand not only in terms of investment and trade, but also in terms of culture and tourism.

“So far we have had more than 10 companies that have physically participated.”

The Dubai Expo started on October 1 and is expected to end on March 22 next year.
