Some parts of the country have received rains in the past couple of days. Some parts of the country have planted their maize and other crops. Some people are still undecided whether to plant or not because of the unpredictable rainfall patterns that have characterised the growing seasons in recent years.

While some are happy that the rains are here at last, there are others who are anxious of what this year’s rainy season will bring. The bad start of the rains that saw a storm blowing off roofs in some parts of Limbe has made this fear real.

While we do not have the power to dictate what our fate will be, we can do something to minimise damage. The first step will be to check the drainage systems. Let us not allow water to form pools in our yard. Such water may weaken structures such as brick walls. The drainage should also protect structures from direct impact of strong currents. This is of paramount importance for those who reside in slopes. Where the speed of the water is increased by the gradient, resulting in higher damage.

The rainy season is an opportunity to plant trees. Trees are important for a number of reasons. The common benefits are that trees act as a shield against strong winds. Trees also hold the soil.

One other DIY activity that enthusiasts must be ready for is the frequency of pruning and trimming of shrubs and hedges since the growth rate is much higher.

The rains will also trigger growth of moulds, get ready for a busy time ahead. Since rains may be accompanied by strong winds, this is good time to prune trees and in some cases cut the down altogether to avoid the risk of trees falling on structures.

Let us also take advantage of the rains to plant maize in the backyard garden. It is always a wonderful experience to munch boiled green corn from your own yard.

Wishing you dear reader a safe rainy season. Remember, if you want it perfectly done, do it yourself. n
