Kinnah Phiri secured Free State Stars’ Premiership status in South Africa after escaping relegation following a 3-0 beating of Moroka Swallows on the last day of the season on Saturday.

Stars rose a step to position 14 on the 16-member Premier Soccer League (PSL), but Esau Kanyenda and his Polokwane City now need PSL and First Division play-offs if they are to retain the top league status.

City’s 2-4 loss to SuperSport United, saw them drop to 15th place on the table. Peter Wadabwa’s Golden Arrows, who are already relegated, lost 3-0 to Orlando Pirates.

Elsewhere in South Africa, Robert Ng’ambi wrapped up the season with his ninth goal as Platinum Stars beat Ajax Cape Town 3-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Phokeng.

Other goals from Mogakolodi Ngele and Mduduzi Nyanda sealed the win for Stars, who have finished eighth in addition to MTN8 and Telkom Knockout cup glories. Ng’ambi is one goal shy of PSL top scorer Bernard Parker of Kaizer Chiefs. He has finished as Stars’ leading overall scorer.

In other games, Robin Ngalande made a rare start for Bidvest Wits University as they won 1-0 against Bloemfontein Celtic who were without Frank Gabadinho Mhango, but compatriot Limbikani Mzava played. Cavin Kadi netted the sole winner for Wits, who ended on third place. University of Pretoria beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-0 through Geoffrey Massa’s strike to clinch 11th place.
