Police Dwangwa are keeping in custody a security guard and an alleged illegal fuel dealer in connection with theft of 4 000 litres of diesel and two sets of computers at Total Malawi Filling Station in the town.

Spokesperson for Nkhunga Police Station Austain Kaunda said officers arrested Mpason Mhango, 24, who works for Forcetech Security Services on suspicion that he connived with Martin Nkhoma, 26, a fuel dealer, to steal 20 drums of diesel and two sets of computers valued at K2 743 000 (about $6 857.50)

“On the night of April 7 2013, thieves, believed to be illegal fuel sellers around Dwangwa Trading Centre, invaded the filling station which is situated within Illovo
sugar estate and siphoned out 20 drums of diesel from the storage tanks after opening the valves. They went on to break into the station’s office and took the computers,” said Kaunda.

He alleged that Mhango was later caught with computers at the estate’s check-point.

“We arrested Mhango who later revealed his accomplice [Nkhoma] and the guard has since admitted to the offence, but the fuel dealer is denying it,” said Kaunda.

He said police have not yet recovered the fuel and investigations are underway to establish the number of people involved in the crime.
