The quality of music in Malawi is expected to improve for the better, thanks to the Malawi Arts Exchange Korea National University programme which has offered two scholarships to the youth of Karonga.

Coordinator of the programme, Professor Agnes Kim disclosed this Tuesday at a music festival in Karonga which was organised to bid farewell to 15 Korean students who helped shape Malawi youth music students at Lusubilo Music Centre in the district.

Kim said her organisation offered Bachelor’s degree music scholarships to 19-year-old Ella Mwanjasi and Kelvin Nyengo after outclassing their competitors in the auditions.

“The two are set to leave in November as currently they are working on passport issues and other logistics.

“My ambition is to help Malawian youths get out of poverty. That is why I introduced this music exchange programme to empower them with skills so that in future they should be self-employed,” Kim told the gathering who watched indingala and mganda music on that day.

She said Mwanjasi and Nyengo will be at the Korean University for four years. Two other youths that benefited last year are expected to finish in 2016.

On his part, Paramount Chief Kyungu hailed the Lusubilo Orphan Care- Korea Music University partnership, saying it will bail most families out of poverty through the proceeds from music sales.
